Decorative Concrete is both an industry term as well as a descriptive. One can say that any colorant or surface finish is decorative. In fact, the most common finish for outdoor concrete is the broom finish (see below).

The most common decorative finish style is the stamped and colored concrete (see above) If you’re building a new home or facility, you can start your decorative concrete plans with the stamping, staining, stenciling or sandblasting, and sealers.

If you are following our information from each concrete treatment category, decorative concrete is both an industry niche and a concrete treatment. The main processes of decorative concrete are:

broom-finish

  • Concrete stamping (imprinting)
  • Acid Staining
  • Water-based staining
  • Stenciling
  • Engraving
  • Sandblasting
  • Saw Cutting

Acid Stains provide the richest, deepest colors of all the colorants at the present time. An acid stain is also high in VOCs which makes it restrictive in certain environments, such as retail store. The odor of the acid stain would potentially upset your neighboring business owners. If an acid stain is used for your home, you would need to plan for time away from the process for some time.

Water-Based Stains or Solvent Dyes are a great alternative to acid staining. They offer beautiful colors and similar features, such as the translucency acid stains. Water-based staining is free of VOCs and is non-intrusive to your neighbors or your lifestyle schedule.

Here’s an examples of Stenciling:
